Trend Alert: Denim Vests

Now that the weather has been hitting the low to mid-60s, it’s time to toss aside our jackets and start thinking about more Spring-friendly outerwear. Reminiscent of the 80s, the fashion industry has been reviving the denim vest.

Since a lot of my friends are metalheads, it’s not unusual for me to see them rocking theirs with all sorts of band patches and button pins. And that’s the beauty of this trend – you can be as creative as you want, and tailor it towards your own individual style. If you’re the arts and crafts type, or just plain adventurous, you can make it a DIY project. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet for refashioning denim: acid washing, cropping, lace paneling, and installing studs/spikes, just to name a few.

DIY: Studded Lace Denim Vest [photo credit]

Since I prefer a little feminine touch to everything, I decided to purchase a embellished denim vest from Hong Kong on eBay. With its silver sequins, chains, rhinestones, and deconstruction, it was practically screaming my name. And for less than $15 with free shipping, I wasn’t going to pass it up. :P

Personally, I have a rule when it comes to denim: Only one piece at a time. I’m not about that blue collar look, if you know what I mean. With that said, this trend makes a simple outfit look edgier. I can see it working well with black leggings and a casual t-shirt or tanktop, but wearing it over a colorful patterned dress or skirt this Spring is just as chic.

Since the weather was gorgeous this past weekend, le boyfriend and I took a walk by the local marina before going out on a sushi date. Predictably, I brought my camera in hopes of finding an opportunity to snap some photos. I wore my new vest over a black maxi dress that I’ve had since high school.

Iron Fist Clothing

If you’ve ever stepped into a Hot Topic or other alternative fashion store lately, I’m sure you’ve seen a pair of Iron Fist shoes being displayed for sale. They’re pretty hard to miss, as they often feature punk-inspired print and details. Although a lot of them are too loud for me to wear regularly, many of them have just the right amount of feminine edge for my taste. But what I love most about this brand is how fearless and unique each piece is.

Iron Fist also carries a lot of clothing and accessories, but to be honest I would never purchase them. Their footwear more than makes up for it, though. I was literally scrolling through dozens of pages on Punk.com trying to make up my mind on which pair to get! >.<; Eventually, I decided on their Santeria peep-toe platform pumps – a wonderful black/green/pink floral print that simultaneously reminds me of Kat Von D tattoos and Dia de los Muertos. The lowest price I could find was being offered on Amazon (yay, free shipping!) by Newbury Comics. Surprisingly, it arrived in only three business days. :D

And you know what? THEY LOOK SO MUCH BETTER IN REAL LIFE. The photos on the website don’t do them justice – the colors are actually much more vivid, and the print looks sharper. The only detail that I would have preferred was if the straps at the front were made of patent material instead of matte elastic.

And the fit? Since they don’t come in half sizes, I ordered these in a 5. They’re a bit snug, but comfortable to walk in, given the height of the heels. I’m still in the process of breaking them in, but I can’t wait to flaunt these at parties. ;)

During a quick photoshoot with my boyfriend outside my local church, I paired these lovely shoes with a casual outfit – we were going to a few bars later that night, so I didn’t want to show up overdressed. :P But I feel like the studs on my purse and collar really complete the whole “bad girl” look. ;D What do you guys think, would you rock a pair of Iron Fist heels?

Bodycon Skirt: Acquired

This weekend, my boyfriend and I drove out east to Riverhead in order to check out Tanger Outlets. Unfortunately, the experience was a terrible one. Not only was it crowded, but they closed down the American Apparel there. :( On the bright side, I was finally able to buy a cute bodycon skirt at Charlotte Russe!

I just love the lace details on it! Of course, it doesn’t look nearly as good on me as it does on the model pictured above. :P But I’ve been dying to give this trend a shot for the longest time, especially since I haven’t been too brave with my style as of late. And who doesn’t like feeling sexy once in a while? ;)

Naturally, my foremost concern was if something tight-fitting like this would ever flatter my body shape. To be honest, it usually wouldn’t – but I’ve found ways to work it. Because I’m a little too thick in the middle, tucking in a tight cami would look horrifying. So I threw a vest over it, duh. :) Thankfully, I found a super helpful video on YouTube that strikes some inspiration in me to rock this skirt in many different ways – whether it be casual or dressy.

I also tried on a few bodycon dresses, but I felt that it was best to take these kind of trends in baby steps. It doesn’t help that I’m not confident enough (yet) to pull off something like this, either. Excuse the blurry photo from my phone. :P

Nevertheless, I do plan on hitting the gym eventually and losing some of the weight I’ve gained over the past few weeks. I swear I’ve put on at least seven pounds.. the scale doesn’t lie! >.<; In other news, I also bought a set of stud earrings at Claire’s while I was at Tanger. Because I always seem to lose all of mine. ;_; Was it slightly awkward that I was the oldest person shopping for myself inside the store? A little. But I have a weakness for cheap, fake jewelry!

I probably won’t be visiting Tanger Outlets again anytime soon, though. The sheer number of obnoxious Long Islanders buying their 6-year-old daughters expensive brand-name clothing made me a little nauseous. Or maybe that was just the terrible quality of the lunch I ate in their food court. <.<;

Either way, I just wanted to leave you guys with a message from my friends at Woman Within before I bring this post to a close. They carry a pretty good selection of plus size clothes. And as a young woman who used to struggle with finding clothes that fit well at mainstream stores, I always think it’s great that the internet has brought about alternatives to shopping. Until next time! ^.^

Ed Hardy: Love Kills Slowly

After my slightly disappointing experience with buying shoes online last time, I’m at it again! This time I was browsing Endless.com, a discount fashion accessories site run by Amazon. What about them caught my attention? FREE two-day shipping on almost all of their products! *squeal* I get so impatient when I order things online – receiving a package two days later makes the already great prices so much better.

I ordered a pair of Ed Hardy’s Love Kills Slowly: Caracas Ballet Flats. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of the brand at all. I hate 99% of what Ed Hardy comes out with, mostly because their designs are always gaudy and obnoxious. Why would I want a giant tattoo-style tiger on my shirt with the brand’s logo plastered all over the front? But these flats were too cute to pass up.The original price tag is set to about $96, but I bought them for only ~$31. They were available in several other colors, too – navy, grey, and purple. But I chose black because I plan for these flats to last me a long time, so I might as well match them with everything. The sole, interior, and half of the outside have pretty designs but are subtle compared to the rest of the footwear line.

What attracted me the most about these are the pointed toes and studs, giving it just the right amount of edginess. They’re super shiny, too! The package came in the mail last Friday, but since I went home this weekend I just picked them up today. :P They arrived in such a cute box! : ) At least I know Ed Hardy isn’t completely tasteless.

A size 6 fits me pretty well, and the pair looks exactly like the photos from the website. They’re a little too stiff, but I guess this is where I’ll have to break them in to become comfortable. I’m assuming that because the original price was almost $100, the quality of the design and material will cause these flats to not get wrecked as quickly as my other pairs have. My only complaint is that the sole is completely smooth – thus, no traction. Especially on carpeted floors! I found myself gliding around my dorm room a little. I’ll get used to it, though. :P

Overall, I am satisfied. Definitely ordering from Endless.com again! : )

Yearning for Spring

Apart from yesterday being my boyfriend’s 21st birthday, we also had one of the nicest days (weather-wise) in what seems like forever! Unfortunately, it will disappear as quickly as it arrived – Long Island is due for snow again later this week. :< A girl can dream of warmer weather, right? Especially when all my favorite stores are already stocking up on Spring trends and fashion.

I love the look of soft, light colors and floral patterns. I already have quite a few floral pieces from last year, since it will always be a classic Spring trend, so I don’t think I’ll be updating my wardrobe in this aspect any time soon. But it’s good to know that the days of me living in darker Fall-Winter colors will be coming to an end.

Additionally, my current leatherette grey/beige/taupe tote bag that I use to carry my school books will definitely be out of place once Spring rolls around. So I’m currently on the lookout for a slightly smaller, more colorful tote! Preferably sturdy and under $30. : ) I really love both of these. <3

I’ve also been on the hunt for a stud earring set that has a variety of different designs – but every time I visit Claire’s or Icing, all the pretty ones (like the two sets pictured above) seem to already be sold out. :( I lose all my earrings so easily and quickly, mostly because I have six total ear piercings and I get bored of wearing the same pairs every day. So I switch them up regularly, often resulting in lost jewelry. >.<; If any of you guys know any accessory stores that sell sets like these, do tell. : ) Until next time! ^o^
