Blonde Envy

aka “How to go from dark brown to light blonde at home for under $50.”

I do admit that from time to time, I feel a pang of inadequacy because of my natural dark hair, skin, and eyes. Especially since two of my closest girlfriends are gorgeous blondes, I often find myself feeling so mediocre next to them. I suppose society’s standard of beauty is to blame, but I genuinely enjoy bleaching my hair every once in a while for a change of pace. :)

There are varying opinions of Asian women with blonde hair. The general consensus always  seems to be,”It’s just not natural.” I disagree. Sometimes, it’s pulled off well. And other times, it’s just a disaster. It all has to do with skin tone, and finding the perfect shade for you. This time, I wanted to reach a cooler almost-platinum blonde instead of golden/strawberry blonde.

The new Fèria Absolute Platinum in Extreme Platinum sounded promising when I first laid eyes on it. Unfortunately, it only lifted my hair a few shades lighter from dark brown to a medium orange-brown. It was at this point that I was getting frustrated with my reluctant strands, and went for a brand I’ve been wanting to try out forever.

Palty is known for being very effective on dark, thick, Asian hair. It doesn’t hurt that the packaging is downright adorable, as well. I’ve read tons of online reviews, and was thankful to find a huge selection hidden in a beauty store at my local “Chinatown”, Flushing. I thought the most appropriate shade would be Super Flash Sparkling Blonde.

It was a bit pricey at $13 per box, and I needed two.. but my hair successfully lifted more significantly. I have to admit that I felt a mild burning sensation on my scalp during the process. But I suppose that’s the price you have to pay for beauty. It came out a lovely golden blonde with brassy undertones. As you can see in the photo below, my ends are already getting fried. :X

Unfortunately, I’m very hard to please and wanted to get rid of the orange tones completely. So I counteracted it with a cool blonde shade, Garnier Nutrisse: #82 Champagne Blonde (Champagne Fizz). I was going to get the lighter, White Chocolate shade, but couldn’t find it anywhere. :/ I was happy with how it came out, though. I got a lot of compliments at work. :P

But after a month, my roots were already growing out and the brassiness was coming back. So I picked up two boxes of Garnier Nutrisse: #100 Extra Light Natural Blonde (Chamomile) to touch it up a bit. And to be honest, I’m in love with the results. It’s the perfect medium between warm and cool, and matches my skin tone pretty well.

As you can see in this photo, I’m almost as blonde as my beautiful friend Kristiana. <3 I’m in dire need of a trim, though. My strands feel like straw, which I’ve been trying to nurse back to health with lots of deep conditioner and by only flat-ironing my hair on the weekends and special occasions. Next month, I might just get my roots and highlights done professionally. Because the bottom line is that as much as I love doing my own hair, I could have just saved myself all the trouble and went to a salon. The extra money would have been well worth it, given the hassle I went through. x_x

Trend Alert: Liquid Leggings

With tomorrow being the first official day of Spring, I have much to look forward to – beautiful sunshine, more hours of daylight, and no more obligation to wear boring jeans! One trend that I want to be brave enough to pull off this season are liquid leggings. They’re a bold fashion statement that can go so wrong if matched incorrectly, but look so chic when done right. ;) And although they’ve already been around for a couple years, more mainstream stores are starting to popularize them even more as of late.

When most people think of liquid leggings, they usually think black and shiny. But our options shouldn’t be limited to just these two characteristics. Brands like American Apparel have a great stock of colorful liquid leggings in different textures – like snakeskin or glitter, for example. The photo above features three of their super fun metallic shades. :)

I understand why many people wouldn’t be receptive to this trend, though. Criticism for liquid leggings begin with its ability to only be generally flattering on those with long legs and smaller thighs, though I encourage women (and men) of all shapes and sizes to wear what they please.

I’ve also heard that they’re intimidating to wear because of how inflexible they can be with the rest of your wardrobe. Personally, I would suggest wearing a basic solid-colored top and a pair of statement footwear. Accessories should be kept to a minimum, because you don’t want to distract from the main attraction. :P But that’s just my opinion. What do you guys think?

New Skin Care Routine

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had bad skin. I tried to reason with myself and blame it on genetics, hormones, and my overall lifestyle. Regardless, I’ve always been very insecure and self-conscious about my face. Not only is it oily and acne-prone, but I’ve never been satisfied with my uneven skin tone.

Throughout high school and early college, I went on and off Proactiv. Unfortunately, it tended to dry out my skin and once gave me a really bad case of seborrheic dermatitis – which left some ugly scars on the skin around my eyes. Ever since, I have been trying to find the perfect products that work with my skin type. It’s been a long vicious cycle of trial-and-error, but I think my new regimen has proven to be effective thus far.

Last week, I bought two things at my local drugstore: Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser and Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner. The former came with a free sample-sized bottle of Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion, too! (Which just so happens to be my favorite moisturizer.) The decision to purchase these two products was influenced by the members of MakeupAlley, my go-to website for reliable beauty reviews.

Although it’s only been a week, I can already notice a significant difference in my skin tone. My pores are visibly smaller, and my dark spots are a bit lighter. The cleanser doesn’t completely remove my makeup, but I don’t mind because I usually remove it with lotion beforehand anyway. And the toner doesn’t dry my skin out as much as the Proactiv toner did, but the sensitive skin at the corners of my eyes begin to flake if I don’t moisturize well afterwards.

Hopefully, this new routine will prevent future breakouts and eventually even out my complexion. Until then, all I can do is wait and hope for the best. If these products don’t meet my needs in the end, I think it would be worth the money to invest in higher-end skin care products. I’ve had my eye on Philisophy’s Purity Made Simple and Clinique’s Mild Clarifying Lotion, but I’m not willing to splurge on them if there are less expensive alternatives. All I want is clear, bright, healthy skin – is it really too much to ask for? I’ll keep you guys updated. :P

Early Holiday Gift Exchange!

Earlier today, Michael and I exchanged Christmas/Hanukkah presents – mostly because he’s leaving for winter break a whole week earlier than I am. :'( We both agreed to get each other small gifts that wouldn’t break the bank. I thought it would be thoughtful of me to get him a nerdy video game shirt. :P As I’ve mentioned to you guys before, we play League of Legends together. The official website just happened to carry this one..

It features the champion Cho’Gath (an alien-like creature that you can play as) dressed up in a suit, top hat, and monocle. This is a reference to the “Gentleman Cho’Gath” skin available for purchase through the in-game store. Needless to say, Michael really liked it! Here’s him wearing it:

But do you know what’s funny? He surprised me with a LoL-related present, as well. :P He got me a pre-paid card through which I could redeem for Riot Points, the game’s currency, and delicious Godiva chocolate. ;)

But that’s not all! HE BOUGHT ME WHITE FUZZY EARMUFFS. They’re so soft, warm, and comfortable – and they make me feel like a polar bear. :D Clearly, this boy knows the way to my heart. <3

This is an awful photo of me, and I put on the earmuffs a little lopsided, but I was so incredibly excited that I just had to wear them right away! :)

In other news, we also decided to go to the mall today. I had a $10 Victoria’s Secret gift card that I wanted to spend, and ended up buying their Precision Liquid Liner in Blackest Black for only $3 instead of $13. I swatched the product in the store, and was surprised by how dark the formula is. I just ran out of liquid eyeliner, too, so this was the perfect time to buy a new bottle.

I also browsed H&M and found a simple cropped black t-shirt for only $9. I would normally hate this trend, but there’s something about this particular material and how it flows when I walk that convinced me to purchase it. I was going to buy another in dusty rose, but decided not to at the last minute. While I was at H&M, I also bought five pairs of cute socks! I don’t know how, but I always seem to lose a pair or two when I do my laundry. >.<;

On a final note, have you guys heard about La Tomatina? When I first came across the website, I thought it looked like the most awesome thing to become a part of. Unfortunately, there aren’t any events near the New York area for me to attend. :( Check out their website, though – you might live near some of their locations. Anyway, that’s all I have for now. I have another post coming soon, though. I’ll mostly likely have it up tomorrow. :P I just need to pick up the package from my campus mail room first. *hint hint* Until next time! ^.^

Black Friday 2011

As per tradition, I went out shopping on Black Friday – just in time for my most recent paycheck to come through. ;) My girl friend Kristiana and I decided to spend it at Queens Center Mall this year, and I couldn’t believe how crowded it was! Thankfully, I was still able to buy a few things that I’ve been needing for a while, without much trouble at all.

First on my checklist were denim leggings! Because lines for cash registers and fitting rooms at most stores were insane, I decided to buy another two pairs from PacSun – where I already know my fit. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that I had dropped from a size 7 to a size 5. :D And since all their denim was on sale for BOGO free, I only ended up spending about $45 on two washes: Gryphin Dark (pictured above) and Hyland Blue. They make my butt and thighs look soooo good. :P

We also headed into Macy’s to browse some purses! As I had mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been looking for a nice crossbody bag for the longest time. I was hoping to find a matte leatherette bag in an off-white shade, but decided at the last minute that black is always classic. I found this Style&Co. crossbody purse, and immediately wanted to buy it. I was considering putting it back down and forgetting about it, since the price tag said $62. But Kristiana convinced me to go to the register and scan it, just to make sure it wasn’t on sale. I’m so glad I did, because it was 50% off!!! :D

The width of the bag is too small for my wallet, but it’s not a big deal since I have the cutest tokidoki card purse to fit into it – for those days when all I want to carry is my debit card, keys, and New York State ID. :P And not only does it hangs perfectly at the side of my hip, but the small metal charm adds instant class and effortless style onto an otherwise plain bag. :)

Lastly, I went to Victoria’s Secret. They were having a 5 for $26 sale on underwear, so I figured “Why not?” Aren’t the patterns I got so adorable? ;D

And for those of you who know that I play League of Legends, I treated myself to some Riot Points and bought two skins for champions that I play – Professor Ryze and Dreadknight Nasus. Mostly because their default skins are UGLY, haha. If you guys also play, add me! My ign is Mirasol. :)

On a final note, my friends at Luminaze want me to spread the word about their products to you guys! They specialize in skin lightening treatment, and who doesn’t want a clearer complexion? So be sure to check out their website if you’re interested. Until next time! ^.^

Hello Kitty Watch: Acquired

After spending the entire summer apart, save for that one weekend he visited, my boyfriend and I were reunited a few days ago. : ) Being the generous and thoughtful person that I love, he brought me a late birthday gift! :D

If it isn’t apparent enough from my previous posts, let me tell you about one of my obsessions: HELLO KITTY. I had mentioned a few weeks ago that I wanted to buy a nice HK watch online, but Michael surprised me by beating me to it. :P

I absolutely love it! The band is super thin and wraps around twice, making my tiny wrists look even daintier. It matches with everything I own, so I plan to wear it every day. <33 Furthermore, Michael also bought me a pre-paid card for League of Legends (which I’ll write about in another post) – which redeems me a large amount of Riot Points in the game. :D

I immediately spent a good chunk of it on a super sexy skin for Katarina, the character I main with, among some of the more expensive champions. Check out this incredible splash art of her! Of course, it’s now my new desktop background.

Click to enlarge!

But that wasn’t the end of it! He also gave me this super cute unicorn plush. :’)

To top it off, he also treated me out to dinner that night. I completely approve of the 2 for 1 frozen mango margaritas at Chili’s, btw. :D So tasty and fruity!

On a completely different note, my mom sent me a package in the mail – which contained some goodies that she bought during her trip to Vermont. Being the home of Ben & Jerry’s, it was only fitting to get me their flavored lip balm and gummy pandas! ; )

Well, that’s all I have for now. Until next time! ^.^

A package from Kirsten! :D

Four consecutive days of blogging? I’m on a roll this week! ; ) Anyway, my friend Kirsten recently told me that she wanted to send me a free coupon for hair dye, but when I received her package in the mail today I was surprised to find more than that! :o

This coupon she sent me will score me a free box of Clairol’s new foam hair dye formula. Which is perfect, since I’m already getting sick of my current hair color. I may go back to brown really soon. Which shade on the website do you guys think I should go for? I’m in dire need of a haircut as well. But every salon near my campus charges $60+. >.<;

Also included were four sample-sized versions of Infusium 23 Leave-In Treatment for my super dry hair! Even though I haven’t been heat-styling as much, my ends still look fried if I didn’t deep-condition that morning. I’m considering trimming them myself, but the last time I did that it didn’t come out so well. XD

She also sent me packets of tea! I remember her mentioning the organic Yogi brand before, but I never got around to trying it out. The kombucha flavor interests me the most, because two years ago one of my friends was a huge advocate of drinking it for its health benefits. But at the time, I had no desire to because the Wikipedia article was a little off-putting. Haha. :P

This was also a great reminder that I haven’t been drinking as much tea as I used to. Definitely getting back into that habit! >.<;

Also in her package were two samples of Dr. Hauschka skin care products: a Moisturising Mask and a Lemon Body Moisturizer. To be honest, I’ve never heard of the brand before, but I’m all for trying new things! :D

But what I enjoyed the most, though, was her super cute drawing of a panda in her written letter to me! Kirsten, if you’re reading this, thank you again – it was really thoughtful of you. : ) If the rest of you guys are interested, click here to read her blog! There’s a link on my sidebar, too, titled “Of Math and Pedagogy and Other Awesome Things” for future reference. Until next time! ^o^
