Trend Alert: Denim Vests

Now that the weather has been hitting the low to mid-60s, it’s time to toss aside our jackets and start thinking about more Spring-friendly outerwear. Reminiscent of the 80s, the fashion industry has been reviving the denim vest.

Since a lot of my friends are metalheads, it’s not unusual for me to see them rocking theirs with all sorts of band patches and button pins. And that’s the beauty of this trend – you can be as creative as you want, and tailor it towards your own individual style. If you’re the arts and crafts type, or just plain adventurous, you can make it a DIY project. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet for refashioning denim: acid washing, cropping, lace paneling, and installing studs/spikes, just to name a few.

Since I prefer a little feminine touch to everything, I decided to purchase a embellished denim vest from Hong Kong on eBay. With its silver sequins, chains, rhinestones, and deconstruction, it was practically screaming my name. And for less than $15 with free shipping, I wasn’t going to pass it up. :P

Personally, I have a rule when it comes to denim: Only one piece at a time. I’m not about that blue collar look, if you know what I mean. With that said, this trend makes a simple outfit look edgier. I can see it working well with black leggings and a casual t-shirt or tanktop, but wearing it over a colorful patterned dress or skirt this Spring is just as chic.

Since the weather was gorgeous this past weekend, le boyfriend and I took a walk by the local marina before going out on a sushi date. Predictably, I brought my camera in hopes of finding an opportunity to snap some photos. I wore my new vest over a black maxi dress that I’ve had since high school.

Trend Alert: Bralettes

A few weeks ago, I attended my first large-scale rave: Naughty Neon 3D. And to be honest, it was one of the best nights of my life. Why? Because it combined three of my favorite things: music, dancing, and good vibes. I can’t even express how infectious the energy was from the crowd. <3

Unfortunately, I have neither the body or bravery to dress up like the typical raver girl. Half of them were literally only wearing bikini tops and hot shorts, and it was the middle of February! D: All the power to you if you do, but personally it’s not for me. At dance clubs, I prefer to be a little more practical and conservative.. which is why I rock the popular new bralette trend.

Wearing a bralette is a great alternative to wearing an itty-bitty piece of clothing that shows off your entire midriff. Unlike boxy crop tops, these fit snugly around your figure instead of draping loosely and end right above your belly button. If you don’t have the flattest stomach, they pair excellently with high-waisted skirts! Not only is your belly concealed, but your torso is elongated by the small sliver of naked skin in between. Less can be more, in the right situations. ;)

In the case that you don’t want to wear a high-waisted skirt, bralettes can also look fabulous with a simple pair of skinny jeans. Just remember to balance your top half by layering something more modest on top. Disregarding the terrible camera phone quality, below are two examples of outfits I’ve worn out recently on weekend nights. Pairing the same two boohoo bralettes pictured above with denim leggings, I kept it classy with a structured blazer and a semi-sheer tie blouse on top, both in black because it’s slimming. :D

While we’re on the topic of looking slim, I’m proud to say that I’ve lost several pounds over the last month! :) My secret? Eating healthy and working out. I never realized how much of an effect going to the gym three times per week actually makes. I’m more well-rested at night, and it puts me in a good mood if I’m having a particularly bad day. If you guys are interested, my friends at eMeals provide some really useful resources on a clean eating meal plan. I’m more motivated than ever to get in shape – so much so that I even rewarded myself with a spontaneous new piercing this past weekend. ;D Until next time!

Trend Alert: Colored Denim Shorts & Bodysuits

Perhaps I’m getting a little too ahead of myself by proposing that we start thinking about Spring/Summer fashion trends.. but I’m already impatient for warmer weather! Especially since the forecast says that Mother Nature is going to be teasing us in New York with a beautiful 60°F this Thursday. :<

Anyway, one trend that I can’t wait to jump on this next season are colored denim shorts. Although I’m the girl that swears by getting everything in black, it’s nice to get into the spirit of Spring and add that pop of color into your wardrobe. Especially with these super-affordable shorts from Forever 21, you won’t be breaking the bank by giving it a shot.

They’re so easy to coordinate with just about anything, too! Because you want the attention to be focused on your brightly-colored denim, matching them with accessories/top/shoes in neutral shades would work best. :) Personally, I’m quite fond of the pastel hues being sold at most popular stores right now. But I wouldn’t mind snatching myself a pair of firetruck red shorts, either. ;D

The second spring trend that caught my eye were bodysuits. While I was browsing the American Apparel website, there was a whole category dedicated to them! The photos above and below showcase their Cotton Spandex Jersey Bandeau Bodysuit, and all the different ways to wear it. I’m not sure if I was attracted to the piece because of the gorgeous model, or because I’ve wanted to be daring lately. I definitely don’t have the body to wear it alone, and I don’t even know where to start in terms of putting together an outfit with one.

All I know is that I love American Apparel for producing clothes in an endless plethora of colors that can be worn in several different ways. They have an amazing collection of photographs, too, which is great for their marketing campaigns. My only issues with the company is that they charge way too much for a single item, and the majority of their clothing are either skin-tight or drapey – both of which don’t flatter certain body shapes. >.<;

Anyway, that’s all I have for now. I’d love to hear what trends for this upcoming season YOU are most excited about. :) In the meantime, are any of you interested in a new skin lightening treatment? If so, my friends at Luminaze know just what you need! Their Skin Tone Illuminator repairs blotchy skin appearances harmlessly and naturally by using a catalytic, all-natural ingredient to give your whole face a uniform look without excessive skin lightening or splotchyness. Their patented natural enzyme is clinically proven to work better and faster than the leading prescription ingredient: hydroquinone. Additionally, Luminaze is gentle enough to use every day – be sure to check them out. :) Until next time! ^.^

Black Friday 2011

As per tradition, I went out shopping on Black Friday – just in time for my most recent paycheck to come through. ;) My girl friend Kristiana and I decided to spend it at Queens Center Mall this year, and I couldn’t believe how crowded it was! Thankfully, I was still able to buy a few things that I’ve been needing for a while, without much trouble at all.

First on my checklist were denim leggings! Because lines for cash registers and fitting rooms at most stores were insane, I decided to buy another two pairs from PacSun – where I already know my fit. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that I had dropped from a size 7 to a size 5. :D And since all their denim was on sale for BOGO free, I only ended up spending about $45 on two washes: Gryphin Dark (pictured above) and Hyland Blue. They make my butt and thighs look soooo good. :P

We also headed into Macy’s to browse some purses! As I had mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been looking for a nice crossbody bag for the longest time. I was hoping to find a matte leatherette bag in an off-white shade, but decided at the last minute that black is always classic. I found this Style&Co. crossbody purse, and immediately wanted to buy it. I was considering putting it back down and forgetting about it, since the price tag said $62. But Kristiana convinced me to go to the register and scan it, just to make sure it wasn’t on sale. I’m so glad I did, because it was 50% off!!! :D

The width of the bag is too small for my wallet, but it’s not a big deal since I have the cutest tokidoki card purse to fit into it – for those days when all I want to carry is my debit card, keys, and New York State ID. :P And not only does it hangs perfectly at the side of my hip, but the small metal charm adds instant class and effortless style onto an otherwise plain bag. :)

Lastly, I went to Victoria’s Secret. They were having a 5 for $26 sale on underwear, so I figured “Why not?” Aren’t the patterns I got so adorable? ;D

And for those of you who know that I play League of Legends, I treated myself to some Riot Points and bought two skins for champions that I play – Professor Ryze and Dreadknight Nasus. Mostly because their default skins are UGLY, haha. If you guys also play, add me! My ign is Mirasol. :)

On a final note, my friends at Luminaze want me to spread the word about their products to you guys! They specialize in skin lightening treatment, and who doesn’t want a clearer complexion? So be sure to check out their website if you’re interested. Until next time! ^.^

Retail Therapy ♥

When it’s “that time of the month”, I get these ridiculous mood swings. So in order to keep my PMS-monster in check, I usually go out and buy myself something nice. :P I’ve been meaning to buy new bras for a while now, and after such a good experience at Aerie last semester.. I decided to go there again. : ) Their bras are a bit pricey – but since they were having a BOGO 50% sale, I think it was worth it.

I was actually really impressed with their fitting room system! They had a whole drawer filled with every style they carried. Because it was relatively empty in the store, I was actually able to take an entire tray of 34C bras with me into the changing room and try them all on. I ended up buying their Ella Gel Pushup Bra in True Black and Abigail Convertible Bra in Dark Nude.

The weather has been getting chillier here as of late, too. Unfortunately, the majority of my Fall/Winter clothing is still at home. So I went out and bought two pairs of denim leggings. For those of you who have been reading my blog for a while, you understand my obsession with jeggings. Not only do they make my legs looks slimmer and longer, but they don’t stretch out at the end of the day! :D

PacSun wins major points with me for not having obnoxious designs or embroidery on the back pockets like other stores do. I find most of their denim to be super comfortable and more flattering to my short legs than other brands, too! I’m definitely addicted to their jeans, as these are probably my 7th and 8th pair in the past two years. :P Of course, since my dramatic weight loss, only two of them fit me anymore. >.<;

I went with their Bullhead Black denim leggings in Luna Indigo and Starry Black, because you can never have too many dark washes. <3 Individually, each pair usaully costs between $35-$40, but they had a sale going on! I had a 15% off coupon, as well, so I only ended up paying $42 for the both of them. :D

While I was at the mall, I also bought a basic red v-neck tee at H&M. I only got it because I’m performing a flash mob dance to Lady Gaga’s ‘Hair’ this Friday night! But I don’t think it’s significant enough to post  a photo of. :P So instead, I’ll just leave you guys with an embarrassingly bad photo of me in front of a corny edited background. For the lulz, of course. ; )

Officially the worst Photoshop job ever. :P Until next time! ^.^

Trend Alert: Men’s Blazers

Since I’ve been trying to convince my boyfriend to purchase a blazer for months, I might as well write a quick post on this popular trend in men’s fashion. :P No matter what you pair it with, a blazer will look sharp and classy. My favorite look for men involves a classic black blazer, dark slim-fit jeans, a graphic t-shirt, and casual non-sneaker shoes. But here are some different outfits that I happened to like while browsing Lookbook:

I think this outfit would look better in jeans, rather than denim shorts – but  do love his shoes, sunglasses, and necklace. :)

I’m not a fan of the denim jacket he’s wearing, but I do like pinstripe blazers. Black jeans are always in fashion, too. ;)

Collared shirts also look great when paired with blazers. Here, the tie really isn’t necessary, but it really puts the whole outfit together. :D

The style is great on women, too! :P

She accessorizes really well here, but I’m not a fan of zippered jeans like that. I also wish I were less fussy with my hair, so that I could wear hats. XD

Her heels and gold jewelry give this outfit a more feminine and professional touch. But I just hate the look of built-in platforms, which I’ll explain in a separate post. :X

I’ve been looking for a good blazer for a really long time, but I guess I’m just not looking in the right places. Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable options for me – I just need to find the right fit for my body type. The last thing I want is for my already broad shoulders to become even more emphasized. :P

I wouldn’t say that availability is the same for men, though. Not only do shopping centers cater predominantly to women, but men’s blazers and sport jackets start at around $60-$80. So if anyone knows any particular men’s fashion store where my boyfriend could possibly buy a decent-quality one in the $40 range, do tell! We’ve been looking for ages. >.<;

And on a completely irrelevant note, here’s a photo of me and my best friend John from yesterday. I love editing cute decorations into all my pictures! XD

Instead of buying new denim shorts..

..I made some out of old clothing that I never wear. : ) For the past two years or so, I’ve had two particular pairs of jeans – one that I bought at Charlotte Russe, and the other at PacSun. Ever since I’ve lost some weight, the thigh area has been way too loose on me, despite the waistbands still being comfortable. Especially with the introduction of denim leggings into my life, I haven’t touched these two pairs since. :P So last night, I decided to turn them into cuffed denim shorts! The process is quite easy.

You will need.. a pair of sharp scissors, black thread, and a sewing needle.

1) Fold your denim jeans in half, the long way. No less than two inches from the crotch, cut the pant legs off in a straight line.
2) Take the hem of one side, and roll upwards twice into a neat cuff. Sew the inseam and outseam in place with a few stitches.
3) Repeat with the other side. If the fabric isn’t sturdy enough to keep itself from unfolding, carefully sew one or two “invisible” stitches to keep them in place.

See? I told you it was easy. :D If you want me to be more specific, feel free to ask in the comments! I get the feeling that my instructions aren’t very clear. :P

In other news, remember the free pair of EOS Adult Pink circle lenses that I received from MyCandyEyes? I wrote a review on them a while back. Since I never wore them, I gave them to my good friend Jessica. They flatter her fair skin and features much more than mine! :D

She also gave me the idea for the two of us to cosplay as KOS-MOS and T-elos from Xenosaga III one day! It really doesn’t sound like such a bad idea – I just need to lose the weight in order to show that much skin. Regardless, when we do decide to do it, we’d look pretty badass with all that armor on. ; )
