exist†trace is a Japanese, all-female, visual kei rock band. I discovered them through my Last.fm music recommendations. They were a breath of fresh air, since 99.9% of all female Japanese artists I’ve taken a listen to were solely pop. These girls are the real deal – they have the hard and aggressive rock sound, death growls included! But they can also produce delicate melodies when called for. They know how to play their instruments well, and their style is dark and edgy, ranging from gothic lolita to elegant aristocrat.
As for what exactly visual kei is..
Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系, vijuaru kei, literally “visual style”) refers to a movement among Japanese musicians, that is characterized by the use of make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics. Some sources state that Visual Kei refers to a music genre, or to a sub-genre of J-rock (a term referring to Japanese rock in general), with its own particular sound, related to glam-rock, punk and metal. However other sources state that Visual Kei’s unique clothing, make-up, fashions, and participation in the related sub-culture is equally as important as the sound of the music itself in the use of the term. So, with the help of Polyvore, I’ve created some outfits based on the wild and androgynous style of the girls of exist†trace!
When I think of androgynous, I think of blazers and combat boots.
This is more of a J-pop look, I couldn’t resist!
I think the loafers and fedora add a nice touch. : )
